Individualized tutoring that builds confidence and deepens understanding.

“It is the biggest compliment when a student tells me that math is their least favorite subject, but their favorite class to come to.”

MEET IAN MURPHY

Mr. Ian Murphy
A certified teacher … with an infinite love of numbers

I got into teaching because I found that I just couldn’t help myself. I was always helping people and teaching people no matter what the situation was. When I was 14, my swim coach asked me to help out with the four-year-olds and my martial arts coach asked me to help out with the kids class around the same age. When I was in college, I helped my classmates from outside the U.S. with their English and I’ve always felt compelled to help people understand things. I am fascinated by how people learn.

The Citadel, Bachelor's of Liberal Arts, English

My favorite areas of mathematics are number theory, statistics, and trigonometry. Number theory tells you the “why” of mathematics. Rather than just taking everything at face value, number theory deepens your understanding of mathematical concepts and makes them accessible to everyone. As a visual learner, I’m inclined towards qualitative reasoning. I understand and appreciate the struggle with quantitative reasoning needed for algebraic thinking. Trigonometry is the perfect blend of quantitative and qualitative reasoning. Statistics fascinates me because it identifies patterns makes sense and the blend of graphics, language, and numbers can be very challenging.
